Project Goals

This project was completed during my time at Workhuman, a SaaS company focused on social recognition. One of their core products is Spark, a platform that allows employees to give peer-to-peer recognition, earn rewards, and view shared moments of praise across the company.

The feature I worked on in this project, Reflections, is part of the Conversations product. It encourages employees to complete a self-assessment each quarter, supporting personal growth while also helping managers understand how their team is progressing.

Previous experience

Below are the key screens from a typical people leader’s journey. This flow shows the steps a user would take to create a quarterly reflection within the product.

The first screen is the Reflections dashboard, where users can access all reflections-related content. For managers with many direct reports, this view often became overwhelming. All content was housed in the same space, and the limited filtering options made it difficult to quickly find specific submissions.

When a user clicks the "Create" call-to-action on the dashboard, they are prompted to choose the type of content they want to create.

This is the template users complete for each quarterly reflection cycle. They are asked to provide a title, date, and responses across several sections that highlight their progress over the past quarter.

Negative user feedback indicated that the experience felt similar to filling out a form. Many also found it challenging to complete in one sitting, as they often needed to pause and look back on what they had accomplished during the previous quarter.

Research

As part of the research for this project, I first took the time to understand how users were currently using Reflections. This process involved collaborating with the Workhuman product research team to devise a research plan, conducting interviews with internal and external participants of the product and analysing these findings.

From these findings, we worked together to devise common themes from the interviews.

Workshop excerpts

Next, I facilitated a workshop where participants were prompted to map out their current experiences, ideal experiences and communicating common pain points and deeply exploring the expectations for each user role within the platform.

Key Insights

Visual Research

Based on these findings, I began to explore how other products and experience made seemingly mundane experiences, exciting. I was particularly interested in examples like Spotify Wrapped, which repurposed user data in a new way to engage with its users. This inspiration would later feed into my iteration.

Final Outcomes

The final outcome of this project was a redesigned Reflections experience. Guided by user feedback, I focused first on improving the dashboard by overhauling the filtering system. This included introducing a search bar, updating the language for clarity, and aligning the filter behavior with common UX conventions that had previously been overlooked.

I also redesigned the entire creation flow to make the experience more engaging and user-friendly. The form was broken into clear, digestible sections with increased use of white space and a more conversational, down-to-earth tone. This helped reduce cognitive load and made it easier for users to reflect without feeling overwhelmed.

To further support users during the reflection process, I introduced nudges that encouraged them to include their recent social recognition moments. This served as a helpful reminder of what they had achieved over the past quarter, while also creating a stronger link between the Reflections and Spark products. By integrating these features, the redesign not only improved usability but also strengthened the overall product ecosystem.
